How to choose a category

Start with the reason you are here. If you want a quick break, pick a topic you already enjoy: animals, food, sports, or music. If you are planning a lesson, choose a category that matches the subject, such as Education for science or geography, or Kids for younger readers. If a holiday is coming up, the Seasonal category is the fastest route to a themed activity.

Each category page lists the available themes and the number of puzzles. The theme page is where you choose Easy, Medium, or Hard. The printable page is where you download the PDF and the separate answer key.

Difficulty and format

Easy uses a smaller grid and horizontal or vertical words. Medium adds diagonals. Hard uses a larger grid, longer words, and every direction. If you are playing with a mixed group, choose the same theme at two difficulty levels so everyone can join the conversation.

Online play is best for a phone, tablet, or computer. The printable PDFs are best for classrooms, waiting rooms, travel, and family tables. Both formats use the same word list for a theme, so you can play online first and print the same puzzle later.
